BACKGROUND GUIDE (.pdf)

Greetings,

My name is Taylor W. Strickling and I am one of the few, the proud, the political science majors at MIT. I am currently a junior and am serving as President of the MIT Model United Nations Society for this academic year. Born and raised in Chicago, IL, I am a life long White Sox and Bears fan, and during the summer I work as a cog in the great Chicago political machine. I've been a MUNer since my freshman year in High School at the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools and have enjoyed every moment of it since.

The Interim Authority Simulation should prove to be a particularly exciting committee this year. As you may have supposed, this committee was added only recently in order to keep pace with current events. We will all assume the roles of real cabinet ministers in the fledgling Afghan government that assumed power on December 22, 2001, and will attempt to tackle the same huge obstacles as our real life counterparts. The simulation will be real-time and you may be provided with a challenging crisis scenario.

Good preparation is absolutely essential for this particular committee. The situation in Afghanistan is changing on a daily basis. I strongly recommend that you peruse multiple news sources every day in order to stay on top of things. I will try and do my part and post updates to the background on the BosMUN website (www.bosmun.com) if events warrant.

Beyond general knowledge of relevant current events, good knowledge of your department and character are also vital to the simulation. Some of you represent well-known personalities or departments for which there is a great deal of information available. Others, I'm afraid, are in the opposite situation. If specific information is not available on your person or field, I ask only that you try your best and make educated guesses based on the research you do have, as well as the information in the background guide.

I ask that your position papers come in the form of a memo. They should include a status report from your department, a summary of what you believe are the most pressing problems the government should tackle (and why) when we meet in March, and a few proposals for action. This can be as long or short as you feel is necessary (but please use your common sense and avoid extremes).

If you have any questions or concerns, or if you just would like to introduce yourself, I would be delighted to correspond with you by email. You can contact me at taylor@mit.edu. I look forward to seeing you in March.

Sincerely,

Taylor Strickling
Chair, Afghanistan Cabinet
