BACKGROUND GUIDE (.pdf)

Welcome to BosMUN 2002! My name is Nikos Tsafos and I will be chairing the Security Council Committee. I am originally from Athens, Greece and this is my third year living in the United States. I am a junior at Boston University's College of Arts and Sciences, where I study International Relations, Economics, and Statistics. I spend most of my spare time either with the Model UN Association or the Debate Society.

The Security Council is a crisis committee and runs on an open agenda. While the background guide deals exclusively with the conflict in Cyprus, I will provide updates on other conflicts that might arise as we approach the conference in March. The updates will be extremely important and should be regarded as heavily as the background guide as you prepare for the conference. As a crisis committee, you will be called to react to fictional scenarios-as such you should strive to identify your county's interests and understand the motivations behind your country's interests as thoroughly as possible.

The committee's default structure will be moderated caucus. Positions papers should include an overview of your country's position in the Security Council and should outline the basic tenets of your country's foreign policy. While you ought to research your country's relation to each conflict that is brought up in the background guide or the updates, you need not mention anything of that sort in your position paper.

Please feel free to contact me at ntsafos@bu.edu if you have any questions. I look forward to meeting you all in March and trust that we will have a very enjoyable committee experience.

Sincerely,

Nikos Tsafos
Chair, Security Council
